A sudden loss of drive motion can be alarming.

This problem usually means an idler or tensioner pulley gave out after sitting for year frozen up, or the drive belt has chunked a section out of it.

Remove the deck and jack the front up high enough for a good inspection when you have the opportunity.

Being this old, I recommend that both small idler & tensioner pullies and the drive belt be replaced, because they have likely never been done.

Yeah. Once I clued-in to the fact that the problem is in the drive belt assembly somewhere (I realized it when I was about to reply to the original responses to my post), I started hoping it is an idler/tensioner pulley issue. Your response is encouraging. Thanks.
