My craftsman 2000 will not go into gear. I know nothing about lawn tractors. On the right side there is a rod going from the rear forward with a spring on it. The spring appears broken as it has no tension and is loose. Is this the problem? Before it quit working it was cutting very uneven as if the deck needed leveling.

You need to look at all the stuff I have colored yellow and see if yours is connected correctly.
