Crafstman T110 Transaxle shaft pulls out

I have a I think it is a 2022 Craftsman T110 riding mower it was never used so i bought it but it will not move in forward or reverse.
I got to looking and the pulley on top of transmission was setting to high.
I took the pulley off and the shaft pulled out of the top of the transmission.
Pushed it back in and got it to go all of the way down and reinstalled pulley and belt.
Mower moved forward about 5 feet before the shaft pushed back up and stopped.
Is there supposed to be a keeper inside the transmission on the shaft or what is supposed to keep the shaft from coming out.

Well there is suppose to be a snap ring holding the bevel gear and the thrust washer. Either it is in the grease or it completely missing.

Can't tell from but there should a groove for .438 retaining snap ring PN 916-0108.

There is a groove down there and that is what I thought that a snap ring must go on there as something has to hold it from coming out
 
Correct, snap ring came off for some reason. Remove rear trans, remove bolts holding cases together, since pulley shaft is already out no big deal, keep it out. find pry groves at each side of trans, lift top half up and off, making sure you don't lose check ball and spring for shift selector. Find snap ring in grease and replace if damaged. Check top seal for damage. Install shaft, pinion gear and snap ring into top case. Add grease if needed, Install check ball and spring. Clean surfaces, add thin amount of sealer and put cases back together.

One problem there is no seal just two needle bearing; likely the SCE108.
 
This could be simple but may be an issue. I have seen this as to were a customer took off the tires and did not see the key fall out of it's place. Without the key in the axle the machine will not move. Very easy to miss and very easy to fix, just key a new key to fit the keyway on the axle. May be just that simple. Worth looking at.

Buy a couple New Snap rings First.
