Champion genset starts and runs with battery, but not with recoil start

I'm a carpenter, not a mechanic, but I do limited work on my stuff with good success. That said, I have a Champion Model 71530 9000-watt genset. It's a dual-fuel unit that starts either with battery/switch or recoil/pull. We've had this genset for several years, and it's always started and run fine when using the battery method. It has NEVER started by pulling the rope, not since we bought it. I've let that go, but now I want to be able to pull-start this unit. My question is: What is unique to the recoil start process that is broken? I'd really appreciate any input on this post.

I have not. I will check that. I keep it in a plywood box with my snowblower, and it's only been outside and running maybe several hours in several years. Maybe 20-30 hours, but I believe that's high. But, I'll check it.
 
does it have too much compression to pull over by hand, or is it one that you pull and pull and pull but it never starts? How old is the fuel?

Are you turning the switch on? The electric start probably has an "ignition on" position and that allows spark to the plug and needs to be on for either electric or manual starting.
 
I'l start by asking what is the actual make of just the engine on this generator?

Then I'll say that if it's starting via the electric battery then listen to echo what "slomo" stated in post #2....

I'll finish by saying that there's probably rust on the fly wheel and/or the armature preventing spark...

When you say it NEVER started with the pull rope, does the pull rope turn the engine? I think that is what you are saying. There are “dogs” in there that should engage the flywheel, maybe they are stuck?
