Can I paint the flywheel without it affecting the ignition magnet?

I've got an engine with rust build up on flywheel, so much I can hear it rubbing on the coil arm gaps. The engine has been sitting awhile with no use. I could just sand it off and put oil on it, but figured if it won't hurt the ignition why not just paint it with rust paint(?).

Yes go ahead
Disc brake paint works well
A bit of a fad amongst the mower racing crowd down here at the moment.

Better check with your Home-Owner's Association about what colors are permitted ....
