I have a 10.5 HP I/C L Head 28B702 - Type 1113E1 - Code - 020214ZD. I started with low compression and pulled the head. Gasket was blown and valves were not sealing so I had a valve job done and the head surfaced. Set the valves correctly and have rechecked them. They are moving a they need be so do not think the cam is bad. When all back together it just would only hit a few seconds and die. I cleaned, cleaned and re-cleaned the original carb making sure all jets we re open and no change – I bought a new carb on amazon. Put that on and it actually started to run just a little more but only with full choke. I reset the coil with a business card and then it actually started to run but still only with almost full choke. It run like that as long as I want but I noticed the muffler turning red hot (rich mixture?). No adjustment of the air screw did much to change this. So, it is running at idle more or less with mostly full choke and will not run with the choke off. Next up would be to pull the fly wheel to make sure the key is not damaged but that seems unlikely as the motor is on a swisher that is belt driven. Also, after I got it to run a little I put the old carb back on and it will not run with that carb much at all. I also noticed the breather does not stop air in either direction when I suck and blow on the tube. I clean it and there is nothing inside that is dirty - it just does not seal up. If I get it running and plug the tube nothing changes. So, any help is appreciated. I have also heard I need to put the air cleaner box on with the filter to make it run right? Again, any thoughts are appreciated.

When you cleaned the carb did you remove the main nozzle and make sure all jets in the nozzle were open and clean? When you post back please include all letters and numbers on the carb.

Fly wheel key sheared - that has been the issue = sheared around several degrees so the intake and compression were open at the same time for split second - thus the spitting from the carb

Dave just for a heads up. The valves are suppose to overlap close to TDC. It has to do with making the engine more efficient. But the sheared flywheel key would cause the plug to spark at the wrong time, which could cause popping through the carb.

yes that is the 1/4" you move the piston prior to setting the valves. Offset the compression release? I'll let you know if it runs
