Hi, does anyone have any idea what could be the issue with my engine not running very well? It pops, stutters, and doesn’t idle well. Has a new Chinese carb, and a new coil. It fires right up and does run ok, can mow. It just isn’t mowing right at all. Any ideas what could be wrong? I’ve looked and it seems like it could be a lean issue?

Might be worth mentioning I did try rebuilding the nikki carb, the needle and float were entirely messed up and it was more than just getting the aftermarket one

Did you have same symptoms with the Nikki carb before you tried to rebuild it? If so, look for a problem independent of the carb, like a clogged air filter, bad sparkplug (check gap and overall condition), old gas or water in gas tank, debris in the gas tank that is partially blocking the outlet, clogged fuel filter or the wrong fuel filter. If the engine does not have a fuel pump, make sure you have a fuel filter for a gravity fed fuel system. Systems with fuel pumps have higher line pressure and can push fuel through finer filter material. Gravity fed systems will not get enough fuel if the filter is too fine. Of course, a defective Chinese carb must be considered as a possibility. Will say that I have not personally had a bad one, but my sample size is only around 15. Finally, have you checked the valve clearances?

Are you using a good quality spark plug?

Was the coil air gap set properly?

What is the full engine number and what machine is this mounted on?

Lean issue is a lack of fuel delivery.

1.Using last years gas and water?
2.Dead fuel lines passing bits of trash to the carb.
3.Dead o-ring inside the gas cap again passing trash to the carb.
4.Using an open top fuel can spout again, passing trash and water to the carb.
5.Nikki carb says it all.

Spout on the right is a no-no on that sun faded can.
