Briggs engine Secondary air valve

Does anyone know what a secondary valve is , how it works and why is it needed? Ran into one on a rototiller with a Briggs engine model 170VU. Thanks for any replies. Bill

That is not a valid Briggs model number. Carefully look at the engine, looking for three sets of numbers together. That will be the model, type and code numbers which will help us greatly. I've been working on engines for 40+ years and I have never heard of a secondary valve. Can you describe or enclose a pic of what you are talking about.

170VU is a valid number, but the engine is not a Briggs. It looks like a Chinese clone to me.

951-14069 is the part number for something called a carb canister.

The part number is 951-12865. If you look on parts direct web site you can se a picture of it. Thanks for replies Bill

Im guessing it is a one way value to allow air into exhaust to pass emissions. Just a guess.
