I know I'm going to hear stick to B&S but, would you guys who have been in this business for most of your lives recommend a good source for aftermarket engine parts for B&S engine and mower parts? I need a 846639 shut off solenoid and most places want $100+ for a B&S original part and some places on Amazon sell Chinese knock off parts for less than $10 and I would question the quality of the part at that low price. I'm just trying to fix friends' equipment at an economical price.

Ebay is a good source for used and aftermarket parts. I’ve had success with Rotary brand for Briggs aftermarket parts. On eBay you can occasionally find good value on NOS Briggs parts.

Do you think OEM parts in general, are 10 times the quality of aftermarket? I have had good success with aftermarket parts over the years. In this case, simply bypass the anti-afterfire solenoid on carburetor, and no need to purchase new part.

Amazon ones that I have brought have been fine. But when purchasing look at both the volume of sales and the rating especially the amount of low rating vs high ratings [3 stars or less].
As for these solenoids many times they are just gummed up and need a good ultrasonic cleaning. Now some do fail electrically and those gets replaced or after some DIYer decided to clip them instead of actually resolving the problem. Don't overlook the connector socket terminals as they do open up and lose contact.
It really irritates me when they are clipped and that is the source of the so called backfire [afterfire] when customer brings in a piece of equipment. Just wait until you come across a Kohler engine's carburetor with two of these type of solenoids. I got one in the shop right now.
BTW Briggs does not manufacture but outsources to the cheapest Chinese supplier that has a good history..

If you buy B&S only for parts like this, you are paying for the marketing and packaging. All of the electrical components are purchased from outside suppliers and put in B&S packaging.
I have used mostly eBay parts for many years as long as I could find them on there. Another good source is Jack's small engine parts.
Thank You are the kind of shop I would go to, I hate it when people try to reengineer things and have no idea why the part is there to begin with.

I buy only engine parts from https://shop.briggsandstratton.com/ if the product is in production, or our local mower shop. The Briggs store is a retailer who sells parts for Briggs but is not part of Briggs. If the part is NLA then I try Ebay. Ebay has people who may look good and who believe they have an original new part, but sometimes they have a used part in a new box. I do not see the cost as me vs them when dealing with others in the USA. I have been burned too many times with aftermarket parts that are cheap clones of originals. If you are concerned about price, use good used parts instead of new clones. If https://shop.briggsandstratton.com/ says they have the part, then they usually have it. Use one of their coupons on the first order you make. If you use the coupon and forget something, sometimes using another Internet Browser and going in as a guest will allow you to use an introductory coupon again. Good Luck
NO I have used hundreds of aftermarket parts over the years, but at the price some of them are sold at in online stores now has me greatly concerned over the quality of them.
