Hi all, before I go buy a new engine I look for some help. I have a 6.5hp engine on a vacuum. Its about 7-8 years old. This thing just shuts off randomly then restarts with on pull. It used to be that once if it ran for a while it stayed running. Now it keeps stopping. One pull and it fires right back up. I make a pass and it stops. Any suggestions? Thanks a bunch, T

can be the fuel cap is not venting, or the tank outlet is plugged and letting it sit for a few seconds the carb fills back up. It can also be a wire that is killing the spark and the act of shaking the engine when pulling the cord moves the wire that it runs until it shorts out again. It can be that a valve is tight and it sitting for a minute it cools enough to close and the engine get compression again until it heats up. I certainly would not buy a new engine under these conditions. I'd find and fix the problem. And I would not rule out bad fuel. I had a boat motor do that once over and over and over until I changed the fuel. On a two stroke engine, which you probably do not have, a crankcase seal leaking can cause that. Most likely you have a 4 cycle engine with gravity flow fuel. A plugged exhaust can do that too. Especially if there is a spark arrestor on it that is carboned up, or mud daubers have built mud nests in the exhaust, blocking it.
I appreciate the help. I looked all over the engine and can't find a tag. Only see an emissions tag. It doesn't say Vanguard or Intek anywhere. I will take a close look at everything you mentioned. Ive been though 6 engines on this thing since the 80s but this thing runs perfect when it runs. Seems like a cut switch or something makes the most sense since it just stops. Has to be something simple. Strange. Thanks again

It may have the model-type-date code on the OHV cover?
It sounds like a fuel delivery issue. May be tank not venting.
Possibly fuel line is collapsing from the inside.
Have you removed the drain bowl?
I had this happen and there was insect parts and dirt in the fuel line and bowl from a gas can with no top on the spout.
Dirt dobbers going in the fuel tank spout to make a nest.
When it stops, please check fuel delivery and report back?

Horizontal and OHV most likely Intek. Model number information could be stamped into the side of the valve cover. But some of the newer Briggs engines CR or XR series engines have the model number information laser etched into the mounting flange next to the drain plug.
