Blade will not engage

I am a new member with a problem. I have a snapper riding mower. It was working fine last week but when I tried to engage the blade today it kills the engine. I have a fairly new belt and it seems to be properly placed in front and back pullies. The clutch seems fine as I can change gears easily. The mower runs fine until I try to engage the blade. Any advise?? Thank you in advance for any suggestIons you can offer.
