Leaves from mowing tall weeds get under the cover near the muffler. Caught fire last week--scary! I can't get the cover off so it is difficult to get them out. Any suggestions?

Is your BillyGoat powered by the Honda engine? See photo of my Billy:

If so, you need to get the heat-shield/cover off the muffler and I'll bet the bolts are rusted and impossible to remove without breaking them.

As an alternative to replacing a bunch of parts (expensive) could you try to poke inside the cover, breaking the debris into smaller pieces, then try to blow those pieces out with compressed air?

It's nice to have somebody else on the forum with one of these machines -- please post photos of yours.

The engine is a Honda. I was trying to get the red cover off. After hours of poking with wires and sticks, most of the leaf pieces came out. The compressed air is a great idea! I'll buy some this week. And take some photos!

A couple of weeks ago, it backfired when I shut it off and the muffler cover is black near the exhaust. Have you ever had that happen?

Re Compressed air: No house should be without a compressor, IMO. 1001 uses. :wink:

The black soot that you can see in the photo I posted is from the exhaust. When I got this mower, it had the wrong air filter (too small). I think that constricted the air flow to the carb, causing the engine to run too rich which caused the black soot. I believe that's been fixed by installing the proper air filter.

Does your engine look like mine? Mine is a model GXV340. I've found manuals for both the engine and the mower online -- free download.

It looks like your brush cutter, but it is a GXV390. It's less than a year old and I have the manual. The dealer said they have had problems with the carburetors on these machines.

The leaves could be part of the problem as they get everywhere underneath the red cover.
