Got really good at repacking the bearing vs spending a week's wages for the whole assembly every 60,000 miles.

Hmmm I have replace two of those idler bearings on two Chevys. Just got to have the right bearing and hydraulic press.

Typical scenario: When you buy a new spindle, and the bearings are shielded, and then you use a grease gun and pump about 100 pumps before grease starts coming out relief or from seals. Do you think the pressure of the grease gets past the plastic shields on bearing and into the bearing, or are you just helping with water intrusion and making yourself feel better? This scenario is another big controversy on the internet.

One pound of grease sitting in a cavity that will never, ever lubricate one damn thing. And odds are the friggin bearings are 2RS and zero grease will ever get to them anyway.

Hint.....put the seal back when done lubricating....

Look I have tried repacking the 2RS bearings and all I did was to crush the seals into the bearing race. Now the ZZ bearing with metal shields can be greased without removing seals/shields.

This video shows a spindle with sealed bearings getting greased, and then the bearing seals removed, showing new grease in the bearings. Those plastic seals aren't capable of keeping out grease pressurized from a grease gun. Just make sure you keep putting in grease until it squirts out.

No need to remove seals & risk damaging them.
For years, I have used a hypodermic syringe needle, with a grease nipple screwed into the (syringe) end to add grease to sealed bearings.
The needle can easily slip under, usually the outer, side of the seal.
Pump the grease gently, to avoid blowing the needle/nipple apart.
If you can rotate the bearing while greasing this will help to spread the grease .
If you cant rotate the bearing, relocate the needle 2-3 times.
Originally I purchased the modified needles from the auto accessory shop - now I just "make" my own.
