Best way to replace carburetor linkages

Replacing a B&S carb. Old carb has been removed and removing the linkages was kind of a hassle .

Whats the best method for replacing the carb links? Before the carb is actually mounted to the manifold, or while it is still loose to move around.

I suspect before it is mounted, but would like to hear some more experienced opinion

That should read "after the carb is mounted to the manifold..." 😔

We need to know which of the hundreds of models Briggs produced. Each may have a different procedure, depending on the carb which was used on that particular model. Post the model, type and code numbers from your engine.

On those engines it is best to hook up the linkage before installing the carb to the manifold. The exception is the throttle control which is done after everything is tightened down.

No matter which which procedure you use , if you didn't color code each spring and / or rod connection with a different color paint you missed the very important 1st step . You'll realize that more and more the longer it takes to receive parts that were ordered or getting back to that job if called away from it for a month or year .

Good advice if you have enough different paint colors on hand. I photographed every connection. But you are right. Memory is not enough.
