Badly need some advice on grass seed and fertilizer for a renovated yard

Hello all! New to this forum and badly need a little advice. I purchased the lot behind my house and its about a quarter acre. Unfortunately it was not the same level as my yard, it was uneven and I am spreading topsoil with my Kubota and a box blade to smooth and level it to prepare for grass seed. I am nearly done and need some advice on what would be a good grass seed to use and what fertilizer to use as well. I live in central Pennsylvania and there are only 2 Pine trees and 1 Birch tree on one edge of the yard that's to be seeded. I am very new to this type of lawncare. I have used scotts grass seed and fertilizer mix for a small area but that's just not economical for this size lot and I don't know where to begin.

I am not a lawn care professional, but I would talk to the pros in your area. They know what works best there and where to get the best buys. Rely on the local guys.

As far as a homeowner I think your best bet would be to go to tsc and get some landscaper mix that they have 50 lbs is like $60. And get some good starter fert. That they have 12-12-12 and you should be set.

Your state university has some very good information on lawnseeding. The seed types, mixtures, percentages, shade and shade sun combinations are well explained. You can go there for information by internet and then choose and purchase from any local source the seedtypes mixed or mix them yourself. Spring is not considered to be the best time to seed a lawn. It is better to seed in spring than have an erosion problem all season long in most places however. You can always seed in spring and if needed go back in the fall and overseed or just start over. Here for example spring seeding is very poor this year as the cold temps are keeping the soil from warming enough to germinate seed. Wind and rain is taking its toll on the seed as we wait for the germination. Dormant seeding was little better this year as the ground never really sluffed open until late and much seed was lost to the wind early as well as early sprouts were uprooted by late heavy ground heaves. The last two seasons of drought and just plain odd weather has thrown about everything out the window in this area.
