I broke the small wire on coil right at the plastic insulation so have no stub to solder a wire on. Replacing coil is confusing because some of these systems have been replaced with a solid state system. I would like to replace coil only. Anyone have part number for original to replace coil only and keep points/ condenser as originally set up. I got a number from JD dealer LG298968 listed as No Longer Available. Anyone had success with aftermarket #298968 such as Amazon?

I would recommend that you convert your points system to electronic. Since you did not supply us with your engine numbers, I suggest that you take your old coil to your local dealer and/or repair shop and have them match up a CDI coil. I’m thinking the new coil will be Briggs #398811, but have them double check it.

Briggs has obsoleted all the old point type modules and are now replaced with the electronic modules. The 398811 mentioned by Rivets fits the 19xxxx series briggs engines so that would be the electronic replacement for your coil.

I suggest avoiding the aftermarket coils, imho they are not worth the time and aggravation.
