B&S Craftsman 2013 Platinum 540cc 19hp Compression Relief Failure Work Around

(1). Interested in a professional opinion, I consulted at length with an electrical component design engineer for a multi national company.

His opinion was that the starter would attempt to draw the same amperage from either the OEM style Lawn & Garden 230CCA, OR, from the Marine Deep Discharge full size #24 705MCA battery.

The difference would be that the little battery would not be able to sustain the output against engine compression, BUT, the large substitute could deliver full useable amperage with no difficulty battery wise. It would zap past compression once and keep spinning. The large battery would spin up the engine starting rapidly compared to the long duration failure of the struggling small one.

With or without a failed compression relief system, the large battery would be no more harmful to the starter than the other. The ability to spin the engine quickly might well save wear and tear even if the compression relief system worked.

He noted the small batteries are used by manufacturers because they are cheap and fit under the seat. Not because they are desirable. In fact, minimum small capacity in batteries causes stress.

(2). At his suggestion, I bought a fairly expensive clamp type amp/volt/ohm meter. Using it this afternoon:
-cold engine choke start= 38 DC AMPS instantly dropping near zero on start
-multiple restarts= +/- 38 DC AMPS instantly dropping near zero on start
-sustained cranking with fuel shut off to prevent start= 38 +/- DC AMPS for a steady reading. Once only. Only for an information test, but abusive.

Been using a similar setup for 20 years or more, no problem. I put the battery in front of the seat, hold it down with silicone, works great. Have the setup on several lawn tractors. When its cold the larger battery starts the tractor without any problems.

I agree, a load is a load. It will draw what it wants.

What you are getting at is reserve capacity essentially. Larger battery will have more available amps to crank over. Still at some point the voltage drop (bad ACR) and solenoid electrical contact abuse will come into play. All those extra amps through the solenoid is some heavy lifting. Trying to overcome the bad ACR that is.

With a failed ACR you have a ton more load on the entire starting system. Its trying to overcome all that compression.

Now THESE figures are more inline with my testing. 40 amps while cranking is normal. This is why I stated to drop a zero at the end of the previous quoted amp figures above.

Larger battery is not a fix for a dead ACR. Believe me, if the engine manufactures could save 13 cents and NOT use ACR's by installing larger batteries, there would be truck batteries in every mower out there for sale. Just doesn't work like what you think.

And all these machines have dead automatic compression releases in them? I'll have to take your word for it.

Factory battery will to if she is properly slash fully charged. I don't mow in the winter so I never have cold issues.
