I'm a new member and would certainly appreciate your help in determining why there is gas leaking from the screen on the fuel pump?

First lets pull the dipstick, and make sure the oil is at the correct level, and doesn't smell like gas. Other than that make sure the fuel lines are all connected to the correct fittings on the pump. The screen is on the same side as the pulse line, So am thinking there is gas in the oil.

If that pans out, then the diaphragm in the fuel pump may be leaking internally, and the pump will need to be replaced.

Thank you ILENGINE for your feedback.
I likely caused the problem myself by overfilling the oil. I drained some out and still have the same problem.
I did notice when I originally changed the oil before this problem started that there was some white or gray discoloration to the oil which may have been caused by gas, it didn't look like water.
The fuel filter was also partially plugged and not allowing sufficient gas to the carb. I blew the filter out which made a big difference to the gas flow and ordered both a fuel filter and fuel pump on line which should arrive shortly.
Are those caps covering the bolts that attach the fuel pump and do I just need to pry harder to remove them to get at the bolts when I replace the pump?
I also disconnected the electrical connection that goes into the bottom of the carb bowl to make sure it was clean and that the float was moving freely as well as the plunger on the switch
I've never seen anything like that before, what is the purpose of the switch?
I'm thinking that I should now do another oil change as the new oil is likely polluted with gas.
Is there a workshop manual available for this engine and if so where can I purchase it?
I really appreciate your help. Thank you.

Briggs calls those things retainers. I would suspect they are similar to the car door panel type ribbed push pins. I have also seen some that look like the plastic rivets used on Honda ATV's on the fenders. The solenoid on the bottom of the carb is to help prevent the bang when you shut off the key.

I am sure somebody around here has a link to a service manual for your engine and will post it shortly.

Yes, I can furnish a Service Manual for your engine IF you like. Address below, put in proper format and remind me engine model number and what you want. Hmm, a 31 series engine 14.5 hp, sounds like the wrong cooling shroud or decal.

I checked the briggs site, and it is a 14.5 hp in a 31 ci engine. Normally would be like 16.5 for most engines.

I have never seen a 31 series labeled 14.5. Originally the 28 series went up to 15 I believe and 31 went from 15.5 up. Latter the 28 series was labeled higher. Of course B&S had the habit of sticking decals for whatever the customer wanted onto whatever engine B&S had handy or a surplus of.
