Ariens RM828 axle installation problem

A gear broke it the differential of my old Ariens RM828 so I put a used gearcase on. The manual says to slide the long axle in with the washer, drive in the roll pin, slide the short axle in and rotate to engage the springs. When I try, the short axle doesn't stay in place, There is no drive and the short axle just pulls out.

does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

I found the problem this morning. The long axle was broken too . The break was at the shouder where the shaft went into the short axle.

Funny how a new day can heip.

sometimes you just have to walk away and come back to a problem i know i do in the car repair business sometimes ill work on something that won't go together for a hour and ill walk away drink a soda and go back and it will just fall together lol
