Are These Two Hondas Worth Fixing to Resell?

Just wondering if these 2 Honda pushmowers are worth fixing to resell. Both are self propelled. Both are missing the rear baggers and need carbs. So if I cant find used baggers for them then I'll have to get the side discharge chutes for them. So right now looking at $75 each in parts plus whatever they need in parts. Both will run when spraying carb cleaner in the carb. One is a HR214 and the other is HR21

I, personally, would fix it. You can't find mowers like that anymore, and the 2 Honda's are the best of all the ones in your picture IMO. :thumbsup:

I'd to find the grass bags used for them instead of buying the side discharge chute. Honda discontinued the grass bag and grass bag frame for them. New carb are like around $60 a piece. The chute is $30 a piece. Just not sure if i could get money back is all. Everyone asks how old is it, when selling used mowers.

I'm looking for one just to add to my collection of vintage Hondas and that one in the picture looks to be in good shape. A lot of folks, including me, will argue that the HR214 is the best mower Honda ever made. I recently sold one that I rebuilt for $250 with a mulch plug, but no bag.

When it comes to finding parts, ebay is always a good part to look. boats.net is a great place for parts diagrams, part numbers and their prices are usually among the best. Of course, nothing beats a local dealer who might have what you're looking for in stock or out in a bone yard.

I would just put mulching blades on them both but having no luck with finding a direct fit mulching blade for either. I found the bags on ebay but no grass bag frames. Apparently theres more to it than bag and frame for the HR21.

I don't have any experience with Honda, but as far as money goes it would not be worth the time and effort to make around $100 for both units when they are fixed up.

The HR21 goes back a long way, and was made in it's various versions from 1978 to 1983. Hate to say it, but parts for it, especially the bag, frame and side discharge are going to be kind of hard to come by. The HR214s were made from 1983 through 1989. More of them out there, but again, a lot of folks didn't hang onto the bag and frame when they got rid of the mower. Patience and continual searching will pay off, but to be honest, I wouldn't expect a quick turn around on them unless you found the right customer, like I did who really wanted an HR214, or me, who really wants an HR21. In the case of the HR214 I mentioned. I did a rebuild on the engine, a complete service on the transmission, new rubber on the tires, new blades. By the time I got done and subtracted the cost of parts, I cleared $50.00. Folks just aren't that willing to spend that kind of money on 30+ year old mowers, despite the fact that the quality of the mower exceeds most anything on the market today.

Edit: HRS21 not a HR21.

Label on engine housing says HR21. But is doesnt have full size grass bag door. The grass bag door is like the ones on the HRS21.

The HRS21 and HR21 are two completely different animals, and the bagging systems, among a lot of other features, are completely different. I believe the S in HRS actually stood for side discharge as it actually discharged the grass out the side of the deck, not the back like the HR21 did. There was a discharge chute, bagging attachment and a cover to make the HRS21 a mulcher as well. The one in that earlier picture behind the HR214 is an HR21.
