always wise to add fuel filter?

The BS engine manual for a used tiller describes the fuel filter as an optional accessory. It then describes one model of fuel filter for engines with a fuel pump and another model for engines w/o a fuel pump.

The recently purchased troy-bilt tiller with the BS engine currently does not have a fuel filter. Any reason I would not want to add an inline filter? Could adding an inline filter do any harm? Thanks.

I can't imagine a scenario where adding a fuel filter of adequate size and flow would be a bad thing. Just mount it in such a way that it won't melt. Fuel filters do clog and need to be replaced from time to time, so that does tell you they're doing something. I'd put one on there.
