I have a Craftsman 917-288570. I have had 3 blade brakes on it in the last 2 seasons and the third one was just put on a month ago. I have to suspect that the mechanism that moves the brake into place is the problem but as I recall it is just a single turn spring. Is there something that can be done to fix the frequent need to replace blade brakes?

Thank you.

If you are engaging and disengaging the deck a lot that can eat the brakes. But typically the one on the engagement arm item 63 is not usually the problem. The one on the other blade spindle item 60 will either get installed incorrectly and flipped around backwards or the rod item.64 will fall out of item 55 due to wear in the rod mounting hole.

Need to with the tractor turned off engage the deck and take a look at the brake arms to make sure they are clearing the pulleys when the deck is engaged. If they are dragging or not cleaing the pulley groove they will get eaten.
