I am currently repairing a Simplicity 38 inch cut model number 163914 lawn tractor, when I got the tractor the solenoid had been taken out and none of the wires had been labeled. I ordered a replacement solenoid part number 1686981 and the instructions that came with the part are less than useful, I have looked at the wiring diagrams and they show that the large red wire from battery and red wire from the circuit breaker goes to post B, the the large black wire from the starter goes to post S, the yellow wire goes one of the tab, the black wire goes to one of the tabs. All well and good except the solenoid I received has the right most post labeled A2 with no other labeling on the solenoid.

I have labeled the posts and tabs 1 - 4 hopefully someone can tell me what wires go to what post or tab.

Thank you

I find nothing with the model number you gave. What does it say on the outside of the mower or recheck your model number again.

All the solenoids in the schematics I've found don't look like yours. You may have the wrong one. I can't be sure if the one you show will work. Maybe someone else can help. I don't want to give you bad info and wreck your stuff, sorry.

the 2 large terminals are the power circuit. Battery on one and out on the other to starter. The two small terminals are the coil when energized by 12 volts close the power contacts (large terminals) one small terminal is ground (neg) the other one is 12volts positive from key start switch.

You can "google" solenoid and its operation and wiring ..They are all basically the same.. in principle ..
I have two Simplicities now; the older a 4212 (1691340) with the solenoid in the battery compartment. The battery plus (red cable now) will go to one LARGE terminal on the solenoid and the black starter lead to the other large terminal .. One small terminal will go to earth (ground (or battery negative) ..and the other small to the ignition switch ..
This 4212 Simplicity is undergoing major work ..I was told that the old solenoid works not .. not true, I tested her and she IS good .
So, we shall see ..

And it makes no difference which wire goes to what terminal on a 4 pole solenoid.
Usually the terminal with the heavy wire from the battery will have a smaller wire bolted on to it which is the power feed to the starter switch ( B = battery terminal )
This power is then fed back to activate the solenoid from the switch terminal S = Starter or solenoid

I agree makes no different, small wires to small terminals and large wires to large terminals.

just one thing to watch out for.
When you test it make sure the battery is good as some solenoids are voltage sensitive so if your battery is down to 10V they won't trip.
This is to avoid damaging the starter motor.
Most often found on engines with battery ignition .
