I can likely adjust the idle screw to rev higher, but I’m wondering what the underlying issue might be. Trimmer runs fine otherwise.

Any idea what I ought to look at first?

Echo - Nice. Does it REV UP fine with no bogging down and hold a strong top-end RPM?

Yes. Runs completely normally otherwise. Just once it gets hot, it will die returning to idle.

Also, to start it, the throttle has to be depressed or it will just die out.

Check the Spark Arrestor in the muffler. If it is caked, remove it and throw it away

You have an air leak or the idle mix is just a tiny bit on the weak side
If it came in my shop I would go with a new gasket between the carb & manifold & a diaphragm & Gasket kit which is the 2 diaphragm & gaskets inside the carb .
