3.5 k budget for riding mower

My JD Stx 38 that I bought new in 1989 is about to bite the dust. It has been a fantastic mower. My inclination is to buy the JD x300 but lots of the reviews are critical of the k46 transmission. And it seems JD s customer service is awful. I have about a half acre of level lawn to mow and periodically pull a sweeper. Any suggestions on other brands? I had given some thought to a ztr but I don't think my wife will use it......and that is very important! !!! Thanks for all replies.
 
I am not going to knock any brand mower. But if I was to buy a new lawn tractor being on the repair side of things it would be a Simplicity. They just seen to be better quality.

A new JD is not the same as the one you got in 1989.
I think your wife would love using a ZTR

With only a half acre I would just get a good riding mower.

I own a few mowers and will say the best bang for your buck will be cub cadet.
 
The quality of most of the units out there today has decreased in the lasted five years. I would have to agree with reynoldston, that right now Simplicity would be the best riding mower at this time. If you did want to pay a little more for a good quality unit, I would look at the Kubota G-Series, but I warn you they are pricy, but good quality. Good luck in your search and please make sure you buy from a dealer incase you do have any problems down the road.

I agree the Broadmoor was a great mower,the deck removal was easy peezy and it was a stand alone deck easy blade removal and no laying on your back for scraping the deck and no mowjack to buy,
 
I would buy whatever brand in the price range you suggest in any brand that has a good service dealer nearby. John Deere or Cub Cadet in your price range are good bets. Or, just go to a Big box store and buy three 1200 dollar machines and use those.
 
I have also heard good things about Cub Cadet and Simplicity. I actually did some searching and found some new Cub Cadets for around $2,000, which could save you some money. Based on some of the reviews I read they didn't seem too bad either.
