2016 exmark Lazer z starter wiring

I have a 2016 Exmark Lazer Z X series with the Kohler ECV940 Efi engine. I'm in the process of replacing the starter. I pulled the wires off the starter without taking pictures or marking them like I normally would. I don't even remember where the ground/grounds were hooked up to.
When I hooked the new starter back up how I thought it probably went, the ground on the battery got hot. I tried two different ways.
I have 5 total wires. Big red from the battery, a small red, a purple, small black, and large black from the battery. Also, the wire with the spade to excite the starter. Does anyone have this specific make/model and can tell me exactly where the wires go? No schematic that I have found shows me where they go.

My best guess is the large red from battery, the small red and the purple wire connect to the large starter solenoid lug furthest from the starter body. The large black and small black connect to a starter mounting bolt. The exciter wire connects to the spade terminal on the starter.

That's how I had it. And the battery negative got real hot. So unless I have a positive touching a ground somewhere, I'm kind of lost.
 
Remove all the wires that you connected to the starter and if you have a Ohm meter then put the red lead on the large lug furthest from the starter motor, and then touch the black lead to the case of the starter solenoid or starter body. Do you have 0 ohms or something close to that. If so then your new starter has a short in the starter solenoid

I got the starter situation figured out. I'm guessing a hot wire was touching bare metal when I put the starter down to bolt it in.
But now, it's doing what it did before which led me to believe it was the starter. I hit the key and the starter gear bumps over and that's it. Does that each time I hit the key. It doesn't engage and spin the flywheel.
 
If you have a volt meter. Then connect the negative wire to the negative terminal of the battery. It will remain there for all the following testing. First connect the red test lead to the positive post of the battery, what is the voltage. Now engage the starter and what is the voltage. Now with the key still engaged contact the small terminal on the starter, what is the voltage. Connect to the large lug that has the red positive battery wire attached, what is the voltage with the start position engaged. Now move the red lead to the other large lug on the starter solenoid. What is the voltage with the key engaged in the start position. And finally put the red lead on the housing of the starter and engage the starter, what is the voltage.
