This has happened before....with a good battery the motor has no start. Only way to start the mower (361) is to short across the solenoid posts. And it starts right up. Put a new solenoid on and no start. I've got a bench full of starter switches, from past problems. Anyway, at the end of the season I'll take it into a mechanic . Any advice would be appreciated. tia
 
Went out this morning and started fooling around with the fuse on the control panel. Had my hand on the ignition switch and when I bumped the blade engage toggle, Eureka! it cranked over like it should. I guess it has some kind of short, but as long as it turns over and runs I don't care.

Is it possible to clean the wire contacts?
Do you know which switch might have been the problem?
 
Shorts are not open circuits period. Shorts causes things to operate when they are not suppose to or things operate normally.

This is like saying my extension cord has a short in it because no electricity is flowing. Well most extension cords are three wires. Each of the three wire are shorts, each from one end to the other. If there is an actual short then circuit breaker of fuse blows. Open circuits is where no current or voltage flows.

So the OP is dealing an intermittent open circuit cause by either loose connections or bad switch contact operations; not a short.
