    Mice

Ultrasonic devices plugged into outlets in my garge seem to have some effect. Bucket traps work well but I don't like to see mice drowned to death and would rather an instant kill like the conventional mouse traps do. Peppermint oil in strategic locations on equipment deters them well. Most...

Okay, I know it was dumb….

With the price of new Honda knockoff engines it's hardly worth taking to a machine shop. I'd either find a used crankshaft on eBay or pick up another cheap engine. The problem I see with attempting to drill and tap the crank is that you could weaken the metal without realizing it and then if...

    Student design project

Well I hope he finished his project, lol. Battery technology is the hurdle to electric riding mowers. Vehicle batteries last over a decade because they have liquid thermal management but that's prohibitively expensive in a riding mower, and at the price range of battery powered mowers one can...

    Turbocharging a lawn mower

Had to check back in on this thread and after reading it again I must agree with @lizford. For it to blow up on the first start is suspect, but the biggest tell is the lack of photos. No way would he try out a turbo kit and fail to have his phone at hand for the first start. That said, if I...

    Turbocharging a lawn mower

Those little engines aren't designed for boost, they are designed to be as cheap to manufacture as possible which means they aren't built to handle an extra 30% of power/torque. Even if you successfully tune the carburetor and achieve higher power output then it will at best mow slightly better...

The Kohler that shouldn't run (but does )

I have a 220 hour 2009 Kohler Courage powered Cub Cadet that's still going strong. What saved it is I loctited and retorqued the crankcase cover bolts in 2011, otherwise it would have self destructed in 2012 or so. I love it. Smooth, fairly fuel efficient, and plenty of torque. I've tried a...

    Oil Leak On Scag Mower

Kohler is generous with service manuals and you should find them with The Google. Youtube for the valve lash The first time I set valve lash I had to do it over after the first try so I advise you to test the engine first and RTV the valve covers back on after you're certain you set the lash...

    Kohler Courage 22hp engine knocking.....

Most of the single cylinder Courage engine failures can be traced back to loose engine cover bolts. After the bolts loosen, the case cover and its bearings for the crank and cams lose stability and thus proper alignment of the internals is lost. At this point the case often cracks or the...

John Deere LA 135 SE: what's it worth?

I'm thinking of buying a 2009 John Deere LA 135 SE lawn mower with bagger from a friend. It has about 135 hours on the engine, new belts, and last summer I replaced a cylinder head and rebuilt the carb due to mouse nest damage. It's been used on flat terrain but my friend does bag his grass so...

    Mice

Please don't use poison, the mice ingest it but live long enough to be eaten by larger predators which could be someon's pet or a bird of prey: https://www.hometownlife.com/story/news/2021/11/26/poison-suspected-death-injured-bald-eagle-found-northville/8738011002/

Should I replace this cylinder head?

I finally found a cheap used cylinder head to replace the bad one. I just fix these as a hobby and this was for a friend, so I didn't want him to have to haul it back over to my place. Total cost for the used head and a new gasket? $51 with tax and shipping. Tolerances on the new used head...

    Clean your cooling fins yearly

If you guys liked that one you're gonna love this. Neglected for over ten years. The mouse urine dissolved the cooling fins on cylinder head #1 and froze nearly every bolt exposed to it. After a few weeks of cleaning and wrenching:

Should I replace this cylinder head?

Great, I'll check the valve guides tomorrow morning. Is it enough to just pull the valve covers and check for how proud the guide stands of the head surface?

Should I replace this cylinder head?

This is a 656cc Briggs 40 Intek V-Twin engine that I'm repairing for a friend. He's been running it for years loaded with mouse nests and they had chewed through the spark plug wire to cylinder #1. Mouse urine has dissolved a good portion of the topside cooling fins. He really needs this soon...

Is the Kohler Courage really that bad?

Mine's an 2009 SV590S with 160 hours. Still runs strong. I retorqued and loc-tited the case bolts which I found were loose in 2015. I also set valve lash every two or three years. Routine maintenance includes oil and filter changes once per year and regular cleaning of the cooling fins and...

    Courage 19 oil drain

I removed the handle from mine, so to operate the valve I just key the handle onto the stem and twist it. If I lose the handle the valve still has a square nub on it that I can open with a socket.

Cub Cadet LTX 1040 42" timed mower deck

I'm in need of a deck for a Cub Cadet LTX 1040. This is an older one circa 2009 or so with the timed deck. You can ID them by the spindle pulleys which have teeth. One of the wheel brackets broke off of my deck, so if I can't find another deck for cheap I'll try to find someone to weld it...
