Can't Pull Mower Backwards - HRR216VLA to bearing conversion

HRR should have a plastic bushing in each adjuster. Sometimes it can appear shinny but it’s plastic in there.

Can't Pull Mower Backwards - HRR216VLA to bearing conversion

No I just used the needle bearings. The real issue is that gunk gets in there and jams everything up. It comes in I believe on the wheel side since there is no dust seal there, just the plastic wheel cover on the back side. You could try just cleaning and adding an inner dust seal. My issue...

Honda HRR Models: Rear Wheels Locking Up When Pulling Backwards

No problem - I've got the same struggle - I love the mower minus this issue. I can tell you it's AWESOME right now with the needle bearings, so if they hold up it's worth the effort. I'll update mid season. Good luck!

Honda HRR Models: Rear Wheels Locking Up When Pulling Backwards

Dont the HRC commercial mowers use a different setup with multiple dust seals? I haven’t tried dry lithium grease.

Honda HRR Models: Rear Wheels Locking Up When Pulling Backwards

The only thing I'd caution you on is that the drag you feel pulling backwards is also what the transmission "feels" going forward... so if it's nearly impossible to roll backwards (such as on concrete) you probably want to fix it. I actually overheated and seized my transmission or bushings...

Honda HRR Models: Rear Wheels Locking Up When Pulling Backwards

Yes that's all you need, but the bad news is that there really isn't a "solution" from Honda except potentially upgrading to the new HRN models where they redesigned it. It's a fatal design flaw and if you operate it in a dusty environment you'll get a few mows before it's jammed up again. You...

Can't Pull Mower Backwards - HRR216VLA to bearing conversion

Edit: 2 Year update 10/18/2021 - the needle bearings worked great for 2 years. I disassembled for re-greasing and found that they HAVE caused some minor damage and mushrooming to the drive shaft especially on the left side where the transmission sits and pulls against the shaft to tension the...

Honda mower rear wheels locked up

Yep, and the main source of friction is the bushings. So far having great results with the zerk fittings and keeping mine greased.

Honda HRR Models: Rear Wheels Locking Up When Pulling Backwards

Dry Lube did NOT work for me. Lasted less time than traditional grease. This is the “fix” I’m trying right now, that I think may hold some promise. I love the mower, just hate this insanely stupid design.

    HRR2169VYA Homedepot

It's a great mower - I'm not sure it's a great deal though. It's a $500 mower brand new with a 3 year factory warranty. Considering Home Depot will match competitors coupons... if you can get a Lowes 10%, 15% or 20% off coupon you can take it to HD and buy the mower new for only a little more...

HRR216K8VYA - Can't Pull Mower Backwards - FIXED (READ HERE FOR TIPS)

I bought and replaced the whole assembly (#7), but the portion that's bad I believe is #15. Keep in mind you'll have to press (I've heard hammer works too?) the new one in / out if you don't purchase the assembly and you'll also likely need to replace the dust seals too.

HRR216K8VYA - Can't Pull Mower Backwards - FIXED (READ HERE FOR TIPS)

EDIT: Anyone reading this please check out my newer thread regarding how to upgrade from this bushing system to bearings. The bushings need to be kept clean at a minimum and ideally switched to bearings. The below thread addresses this as well as has other good preventive ideas...
