Briggs engine kicks back when starting, runs rough, hard to start. But Ignition module, spark plug, flywheel key are fine?

I do plan on getting some more tools in the near future - air hammer, pneumatic drill, compressor, torque wrench, tap/die set, new ratchet, maybe a welder one day, etc. Anyway I drilled out the broken bolt yesterday to 5/16ths. I don't have a drill press, so it's not perfectly straight, but it...

Does anyone know why Briggs made the L head engine 190cc engines and called them 6.50, 6.75, 7.00, 7.25 etc.?

As long as we're getting the biggest/best for replacement. A more powerful engine is ok with me.

Briggs engine kicks back when starting, runs rough, hard to start. But Ignition module, spark plug, flywheel key are fine?

You know what I bet you're right. It does kinda sound like that's where the noise is from. So otherwise, it's pretty smooth but the engine of course still is running in a way I think ain't right. I't probably fine. Maybe I'll try runnin some seafoam through and adjusting the governor. Also the...

Briggs engine kicks back when starting, runs rough, hard to start. But Ignition module, spark plug, flywheel key are fine?

Good news. The mower I started this thread on, that had the fully sheared key, is now fixed and back with its owner. +40 bucks for me. It needed nothing but the flywheel key. I also sharpened the blade best I could and balanced it. (He needs to replace it after hitting all the stuff he has...

2005 Troy-Bilt Bronco with Automatic Drive and Cruise - Drive problems after extended use

Thanks! I'll look carefully at each pully and see. I think it must be heat related since it only happened when ran for a long time (and right after installation very briefly, but who knows what that is).

Does anyone know why Briggs made the L head engine 190cc engines and called them 6.50, 6.75, 7.00, 7.25 etc.?

I see, they must be making just tiny little changes then like you said, to the point where I don't notice. Silly, isn't it. They don't even make the L heads anymore, which is a shame. Much harder to break, valves never went out of adjustment for me. I miss the sprinter and quantum. The OHV ones...

Briggs engine kicks back when starting, runs rough, hard to start. But Ignition module, spark plug, flywheel key are fine?

I did, nothing yet. I may also leave this one alone. I checked the blade again and apparently the boss was damaged and the blade wasn't flat. I straightened it out and it's much smoother now, though it runs a bit low on the RPMs. I think the timing is a smidge off. I tried to create a puller...

2005 Troy-Bilt Bronco with Automatic Drive and Cruise - Drive problems after extended use

Gotcha. If this happens again I'll replace the other. Curious that it took an hour for the issue to show up. I don't think the pulleys are grooved, but I'll check again. Side note I think most of the damage/wear on this mower was actually caused by sitting around, not lots of hours. It seems...

2005 Troy-Bilt Bronco with Automatic Drive and Cruise - Drive problems after extended use

It is a single speed with a go pedal, so I can make it go what speed I want by how hard I press it. The model number is 13AJ609G76637746. S/N 1D065H10105 000003. I replaced only one drive belt, the other looked to be in pretty good shape.

Briggs engine kicks back when starting, runs rough, hard to start. But Ignition module, spark plug, flywheel key are fine?

Taryl Dactal is awesome. Unfortunately he's taking a break during all the Corona nonsense. Anyway, yeah, I think I'll get a puller for safety reasons. Like I said something cracked on my scrap engine just the other day so I'm nervous now. Really hope the holes are already tapped.

2005 Troy-Bilt Bronco with Automatic Drive and Cruise - Drive problems after extended use

Hello All! Recently picked up a 2005 Troy-Bilt Bronco on the side of the road for free. It had sloppy valves that were making it hard to start. Easy fix! Unfortunately I immediately suspected compression release, which led me to tear apart the entire motor. Had to replace the sump gasket as a...

    Mower will not turn over.

I believe these engines have a problem with the compression release going bad. That would be on the camshaft. Check that last, because (and I've learned this the hard way), tearing that far into the engine only to find out it was something simple like rusty contacts is mildly infuriating. Check...

Does anyone know why Briggs made the L head engine 190cc engines and called them 6.50, 6.75, 7.00, 7.25 etc.?

Always wondered why there are Briggs 650, 675, 700 series engines that seem identical. They're all 190cc engines with the same carburetors. Why do they have different torque specs? It's annoying when trying to find parts. I guess I can assume parts are compatible. Does anyone know why this is?

Briggs Pulsa Jet carburetor issue - won’t pull fuel up?

I made a cork gasket, which is quite thick, and it seems to be allowing it to work now.

Briggs Pulsa Jet carburetor issue - won’t pull fuel up?

Mine does have the stupid plastic insert. I can't imagine why fuel sloshing matters. I don't know how I would remove it though, because the filler hole is a smidgen smaller than the plastic piece.

Briggs Pulsa Jet carburetor issue - won’t pull fuel up?

I don't think so... hope not, cuz it's a weekly occurrence for me. Can't be worse than dipping I suppose.

Briggs engine kicks back when starting, runs rough, hard to start. But Ignition module, spark plug, flywheel key are fine?

Good to know, thanks. I'll try and get the flywheel off without using the chisel and hammer. Maybe I finally invest in a proper puller.

Briggs engine kicks back when starting, runs rough, hard to start. But Ignition module, spark plug, flywheel key are fine?

Figured it out. I'm an idiot. The key was sheared after all. It sheared at an angle so that it looked whole on the top, but wasn't really. In fact, it was almost 1/5 of a turn off. I can't believe it ran at all. I'll go replace it tomorrow. I decided to check one of my other engines that is...

Briggs and Stratton 550E not starting

The opposite happens with chokes, actually. The choke plate is 'closed' and blocks most air flow when off, then opens to let air in when warm. This engine does not have a choke though. I worked on a couple of these recently. Luckily for me the problem was only the jets were plugged, and I used a...

Briggs engine kicks back when starting, runs rough, hard to start. But Ignition module, spark plug, flywheel key are fine?

Hello all! I am working on a mower for one of my neighbors, that can't get it started. I took it back to my garage and started looking it over. Something is a bit off of it. It's a 650 series briggs 190cc L head. The pull rope does not have as much length as I would expect, and there's a plastic...

Briggs Pulsa Jet carburetor issue - won’t pull fuel up?

Thanks everyone! I've determined that the issue is with the pickup tube finding every tiny piece of dirt in the tank. It keeps clogging. Hopefully at some point it will get the last of the dirt and stop clogging. The pump and everything else is working quite well. Starts on 2 pulls.

Briggs Pulsa Jet carburetor issue - won’t pull fuel up?

Any chance it’s a generac? Mines also a 2400 watt hooked to a 5 horse L head Briggs. Tank didn’t seem too awful but I didn’t inspect thoroughly. Will do soon. That shouldn’t be what’s clogging the carb though because there’s a filter on the pick up

Briggs Pulsa Jet carburetor issue - won’t pull fuel up?

I check them for being clear by blowing into the tubes. This proves effective, although its probably shortening my lifespan and makes my mouth sore. Today I went down to my local power equipment store, and sure enough, they had a diaphragm! I put it in, and got it to run for about 30 minutes...

Briggs Pulsa Jet carburetor issue - won’t pull fuel up?

I’ll try that first. Considering it looks frayed and the gas had went bad In it that’s probably the issue. I hope.

Briggs Pulsa Jet carburetor issue - won’t pull fuel up?

Hey everyone! I live in Matthews, NC and we just got hit with an F1 tornado. Power has been, as such, knocked out. It isn’t expected to be restored for at least 2 days. In the mean time I cranked up my old Coleman generator, it’s a small one just enough to run a fridge and charge some devices...
