With a new aftermarket carburetor, and the engine is hunting and surging, it is running lean (not enough fuel). The air/fuel mixture ratio is not right. Best thing you can do in this case is completely clean the original OEM carburetor and reinstall.

It is a piece of junk, from the trimmer, to the trimmer head. If you have had enough, buy a better brand.

Keeping the angle consistent along the length of blade is one of the most important aspects of sharpening a mower blade correctly. I see homeowners rounding the blade all the time. You should be able to look at the blade edge that is sharpened and see no difference in the pattern.

Compression is low for a 2-stroke if you are using a proper compression tester for small engines (Schraeder valve). You have spent a lot of time on this Ryobi turd trimmer. If you can’t get it running, move on to real equipment.

I would start by draining some fuel from tank and checking it for water. Then blow back through fuel line into tank with air compressor. The best practice when you are using tools daily is to at least replace them in correct spots daily to prevent misplacing them, and speed up time looking for the right tools. Looking for tools you need gets old as I know from experience.

I would recommend going to your local Stihl dealer and letting them help you locate the correct trimmer line head. They can install it also if you ask nicely.

What is “high hours?”. Does mower have steering dampers on steering arms, and is does one damper need to be replaced? Obviously you need to replace the cracked hydro reservoir. Go through hydro purge procedure if you think it needs it.

Also be sure to blow through fuel to fuel tank with cap off to remove any debris caught in the line or connections.

You are correct. Keep it fresh, keep it moving. Ethanol is hygroscopic (absorbs moisture). Just takes a little more thought is all, and you can save $.75 a gallon as well.

Possible ignition coil problem. The coil is borderline and as it heats up, begins putting out weaker spark. Don’t spend a lot more time on it trying to figure it out.

I am seeing lots of water in fuel this year. It happens all the time, and one of the first things to check.

If the fuel pump is delivering a nice steady stream of fuel, yet there is no fuel in the carburetor, and it will start briefly when you add fuel into throat of carburetor, then most likely the anti-afterfire solenoid is not working, or possibly dirty carburetor.

If you have no spark with kill wire disconnected from ignition coil, then it is time for a new coil.
