    Problems with compression test.

A few years ago, 1957, I had a early Matchless 500 single. ( Big 'jump' up from my Whizzer ). To start it, I coasted down the Vernon street hill, and released the clutch in 2nd gear. There were many failures,,, push it back up the hill,, try again. Uncle (machinist) installed a 'flip-valve' by...

Briggs& Stratton engine will not turn over

How old is this clunker ? Once the spark plug hole is 'stripped', the threads will no longer mesh with the spark plug. You must purchase a new head & head gasket. Don't waste your time & $$$ with doo-dads to 'fix' the stripped threads. Now is the time to wire-brush the black carbon buildup...

    B&S 12H882-3173-E1 Valve adjustment ?

Hmmm, I think we are in the same boat ! My old 8HP rider refuses to die, so, I must run higher RPM, which causes old-valve-rattle. The solution - try adding a little two-cycle oil to your gas. Just a 'tad'. If it smokes, that's too much. Note: this was written 3 years ago,,, its still running !

I just was given a newer OHV B&S small mower. The mower was junk, but the engine starts on 1 pull ! Suppose the B&S could fit the Honda...

    Briggs & Stratton China carb

That tiny return spring is mis-connected. Don't start it. First check the carb-throttle-plate position. It should be wide-open. When you choke & start, the engine govenor will pull it back to wherever you have set the handlebar-throttle. All back - kills the spark. Note: Some Asian...

    B&S Vanguard 9HP #185142 "OilGard" gizmo

$100 "OilGard" gizmo - Note: the spelling is from B&S service manual #272147 (which is for water-cooled engines ???) Engine has good compression, carb is functioning, cheap plastic gas tank leaks (above the generator) ... but there's a tin shroud, to direct the leak over-top the hot engine ...
