Up date , mower was over reved and now governor has no push. Is it a loose connection or a bad governor?

I own this mower and my kids wired the governor wide open . The machine quite. I got it to restart but have to manually hold the governor open to allow unit to run. Is the governor plastic gear ? What is the normal failure of this type with a run away motor.Its run great but I wounld love to fix...
