After trying everything, I simply removed solenoid, clipped the plunger off, added a fuel shut off valve and presto. Runs like a champ!

Mine just would not start; it was firing but just would not turn over. Clipping the plunger worked like a champ

I also inserted a check valve into the gas line which I open only during use and close when it is parked.

"Mechanic" simply told me to change the battery - you are probably on to something here. But I think I'd rather deal with an occasional backfire then not being able to use it at all.

Yes - even replaced the battery. Snipping the plunger seems to have solved the problem.

Will only spin at cold start but if you hit it with starting fluid will crank right up and run like a dream. Have replaced plugs, fuel filter and air filter to no avail. When warm/hot will start effortlessly. Any suggestions?
