Is it seeping out of the cap threads or is it migrating over from the carb to tank gasket which is also a know leak location.

If it sat for a year without being started, wouldn't hurt to check the exhaust holes for dirt dauber nest.

All signs point to a faulty safety switch or wiring. Or incorrect bypass of safety system which should be reinstalled after troubleshooting.

What happens if you loosen the fuel cap. Be away the fuel cap isn't vented, but if loosening the cap fixes the issue that would point to a clogged vapor recovery system. Also something else to check is when it quits do the spark plugs still have spark.

Not totally true. MTD still has some belts that go by the 754 number and I have seen a few that went from 754 to 954 and then back to 754. Depends on how they package them.

754-0370 is the same belt as the 954-0370 except the 954 belt has a paper sales sleeve, whereas the 754 is without the sleeve.

Looks like the carb for both years supercedes to the 594593 carb which is the replacement for both the Nikki and the Walbro carbs. Most likely the replacement is Ruixing.

Two things come to mind. 1- MTD products do not like non-OEM Belts. Just because the belt exchange says it is a 1/2 x 57 doesn't make it so. And 2- Check the engine pulley for a groove which could prevent proper grip on the pulley.

The worm shaft would bend and break off at the top of the starter housing. The bushing I refer to is the top sleeve bearing in the starter housing and it would egg out due to the side loading of the starter torque.

That starter had issues with the top bushing wearing causing binding, also issue with the shaft either bending or breaking off.

If you are talking about the deck anti scalp wheels they are not supposed to be touching the ground. There designed purpose is to prevent running the deck into the ground on uneven terrain. They are not designed to make the deck float and adjust to the ground level changes.

Check the engine speed. If trying to run too fast or too slow may cause surging with the fixed speed carbs. You can try holding the governor steady and see how it runs. If it runs smooth then related to governor sensitivity or engine speed, if runs poorly then carb related with running too...

Could you supply us with the model number info on the engine so we are not guessing what setup this engine has. Could be a governor sensitivity issue causing the surging or due to misadjustment of the governor spring system.

The governor gear is replaceable. the complicated part of this project is removing the genset from the engine so you can remove the sump cover to get to the internals.

Looks like the long belt should be the 954-0467 And the short belt is 954-04208A And if they mower is just setting without running the pedal may not move very far because of the pulley ratio at the variable pulley is set for low speed and without spinning won't have much pedal takeup.

I am assuming this is the type where the lever moves the head forward to engage the blade belt. If so there should be a square headed set screw on the pipe that the tension arm is attached to toward the head that you loosen and then slide it along the smaller inner pipe to set the tension.

Maybe it is an optical illusion, but it looks like the two belts on the variable pulley are reversed. The belt that goes around the transmission pulley and the idler pulley should be in the top groove, and it looks like it could be in the bottom groove.

I suspect that when trying to remove the insert the turning action causes the spring coils to compress onto the insert making it even more difficult to remove.

That mower is new enough to be the OHV engine. May want to look at the side of the block. Some of the newer engines have the model number etched into the block. Believe on the Muffler side of the engine block.
