my white lgt 1655 goes up i hill for a few feet and then just barly moves. if i do it in reverse it does i just fine. could my rear end be going out of it?

my mower started 2 weeks ago and now it wont start. when i turn the key on and try to start it the wire that runs from the battery to the solinoid starts to glow red hot and starts to smoke the cable but when it does this it turns over. i need to know what i need to do to get the thing running...
