Spring Lawn care tips

Hey bomba I think you're referring to henbit and I don't know what state you're in but did yall have a rainy February and early/mid March? If you did then that's why theyre so widespread. Those purple weeds I was talkin about are henbit and they're everywhere here too bit that's because it rained a lot during the early stages of late winter and early spring and that's what causes them to thrive like they are

Aha! Ok I wondered why they are so widespread this year. I'm in north Georgia and yes we have had a lot more rain than you would normally have over the winter. What is the best way to get rid of it?
 
Well outside of spraying, which I would forget that idea, the best way is to to cut the yard really short to swipe off the majority of the weed's body. This will keep it from coming back so rapidly. If you just skim it its not gonna help. Clients might not want it so short but if you explain they might

I don't know if these are the same purple weeds you have, but this is what I have. Now that I took at them they aren't really THAT purple, and it's only the stems....the flowers are white. :rolleyes:

Nope, I don't think that's henbits(we've gottem here in Middle TN too, but I don't have any pics). If I'm correct, the henbit looks like a small "leafy" grape hyacinth that's not quite as "blue"....more "purple". Maybe someone can post a pic.

This is what I have in my yard that I believe you are saying you also have being as we are in the same region. It is called Wild Violets, purple flowers with a heart shaped leaf.

Yep, I think you nailed that henbit weed that time!!!! That's what I've got and I think others will confirm. We too have had an unusually wet winter & early spring which makes these things take over(but like mentioned...they don't seem to last long I think because for a weed, they aren't heat tolerant).

midnite rider,
We have those wild violets here in Middle TN too, but they're not the prolific agravation that the henbit is.
