Crankshaft and Camshaft end play

Ok its not so much an end play measurement, its just a static level/gap mesurement. But this Kohler tool is crazy.... Can't see why I can't use a simple steel rule (or a thick sheet of glass) across the case?

no, a gap=end play measurement. static level?? did i throw you off with dial indicator talk-forget it

Your last sentence above...because you probably cannot see nor reach the INTENDED"gap" between the cam and the case with the cam gear in place. try putting the "tool" on where the gear is. you will need a puller most likely (or press)

Thread 8 above ...you MUST have the cases on and torqued to make the measurement (with the tool in place of the cam gear,I think)

Also I believe that instruction 3 you cited has a typo...SB "move toward the crankCASE," not crankshaft. are you having fun yet?? :mur:

Hi Gents,

Theres no way to measure anything with the cover back on and this is the one photo I've got that shows how the tool is used (sorry, I ment to post this up before).....

No "move towards the crankshaft" is actually correct.

Have the tool in my box, but never had a reason to use it. Was shown how to use at service school ( to many years ago to remember what they told us ). Personally I think this tool and checking camshaft clearance is an engineer at Kohler saying let's sell them a tool and drive them nuts. If you think about it, Camshaft end play is affecting a 5/16" wide cam gear and 5/8" wide cam lobe. If it is moving an extra .005 what will it affect in performance? Just my opinion. Never really worry about it when I do a Kohler rebuild.

I just remembered I saw a single cyl Kohler cam end play measurement on line. It looked like it was done down thru the dip stick hole. Didn't take down the model no.

:laughing:About the Engineer, that is true not only Kohler but everything in todays world. I have said many times, when working on something, I wish I had the Engineer here who designed it. Maybe he/she would re-thunk their design.
