Sounds like the fuel shut-off solenoid is shorting out, causing the heat. Shouldn't get hot at all. How long has it been doing this? When the power shuts off to the wire, the solenoid is like a door bell and a spring closes the fuel to the engine with a needle that goes into the pickup tube, thus starving the engine of fuel. I would venture a guess that the solenoid has an internal short. You can test the solenoid to see if it's ok. Take the solenoid off of the carburetor. Plug it back in. Touch the metal casing of the solenoid to metal and then turn the key on. The plunger should retract and then move out when you turn the key off. That is the only test to do and even at that it still could be bad.

don't know how long, started it up this morning, backed it out of the garage, shut it off while preparing to load it on trailer. on starting it again it ran for a few seconds and died. did all the obvios things, then noticed the thing was hot when i touched it.

With switch OFF,and the wire OFF the solenoid, and after draining fuel out of tank or pinch the fuel line off, remove the shut-off solenoid and take it and reattach the wire. Hold the metal part against the engine or frame for a good ground, turn the switch on, it should retract. Then turn switch off and it should let go and come out. Hope this helps but looks like the solenoid may be burned/shorted out. Just have to replace it. But I would test it first.
