New Deck Belt on my 36" metro too tight to engage

I've spent many hours trying to replace my belt and get the mower running. It's an Exmark Metro 36 deck belt MGS481CKA36200, serial number 315xxxxxxx, model mower. I've verified the belt is the 82 5/8" x 5/8" V-belt, and if I adjust the clevis bolt one way to get the belt off the keepers/guides, it's so tight in the blades-off selection that you cannot engage the belts to turn. The only thing I've done is replace the belt. Nothing is bent, and yet replacing this belt has been unsuccessful. Any help would be grand. Thanks in advance.

I am not familiar with your mower, but having replaced many belts, on may mowers, over the years the common issues are -
  • Incorrect belt (too small). Even if part number appears to be correct for your make/model, it is not unknown for this to be the wrong OR the wrong belt has been packaged to the correct part number. Recheck the physical dimension (rather than PNo) of the belt.
  • Failure to release idler/tension pulley tension. This may be a lever/chain tensioned spring or just a spring that must be disconnected.
Good Luck!

Yes, I have done those items you mention, but to no avail. I even purchased a second belt to be sure. Thanks for the reply. It just seems very odd to me. I'm pretty mechanically inclined, but this has me stumped. :( Looks like it is gonna have to go to the mower doc to get fixed.
