Wiring help w/ regulator/rectifier on Hustler Super Mini Z

Looking for some wiring help with the regulator/rectifier on my Hustler Super Mini Z.

  • Model: 927285
  • Serial: 06030023
  • Engine: Honda GCV670, 24 HP
The regulator/rectifier needs to be replaced (or may be wired incorrectly), and I don't know which wires go where. My battery goes dead after about 45 minutes of mowing, so it's clearly not charging.

Here's what I have:

  • 2 gray wires from the stator/alternator under the flywheel (about 40 VAC between them while running).
  • 2 purple wires that go to the positive terminal on the starter motor.
  • 1 smaller black wire that I don't know where it connects.
I'm not sure if the regulator body is grounded through its mounting bolts or if one of these wires should be the ground.

The current regulator is a SH711AA. Looking at the rectifier from the top, the wires are:

Gray - White - White/Black - Black/Yellow - Black - Gray

Does anyone have a wiring diagram or know where each of these wires should connect? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Some mowers won't charge a bad battery, or some that are low. Did it ever work? How old is the battery? Has it been charged on a workbench, and tested to see how much life is left in it?
 
I haven’t done checks on the battery but when I check the voltage at the battery when running it’s not > 12V. It doesn’t seem to be trying to charge. The mower had an engine fire that melted the wires. It had run and charged. I got it running again and spliced new wiring into the harness but messed something up with the regulator wiring.

The FIRST item you always check with electrical issues is the battery. Charge and load test the battery and clean all terminals and make sure connections are tight. Then proceed to regulator/rectifier installation. Also the stator could be bad. Both these parts need to be tested before replacing.
