Honda GCV160

I’m assuming that it stays running if you leave the choke on. If that is correct two things occur to me. First, has this engine ever run properly with no choke or is it new to you and you’ve never seen it run without choke? I ask because it has been my experience that some of these Honda engines, unlike Briggs or Kohler, take a minute or so to get warm enough to run with no choke. If you’ve been giving it plenty of time with choke, then I would look for a leak where the carb mates up. A bad connection could be letting in air and leaning out the mixture and hence it needs a richer mixture to start with, ie: a closed choke butterfly. How does the gasket look? Are the carb studs/nuts nice and snug? Is the air filter clogged? Finally, it has also been my experience with Hondas that they use up sparkplugs. I don’t know that a weak spark would cause this but if you have an extra plug, worth a try.

Absolutely makes no sense to me but the new plug solved the problem!! WHY??
