Yes a old on but one of (4) in the family . This unit had a transmission replaced about 5 years ago and was used as a spare for the family (brother-brother-in law- me). I had local Honda dealer adjust speed cable this year at start of season and it was slow. Ran like a champ until about 3 weeks ago. Was about 15 minutes into my mowing and on flat ground when it just stopped moving . First thing I thought was a cable came off . It made no indication or sound iyt just stop .I have tried everything and basically taking it down to where I could remove transmission if needed . Still no movement .No oil around transmission . Belt is ok . Cables seam ok . Yesterday I adjusted the cable to the handle that engages the drive wheels and did get a small movement forward but only once. If I run the mower and have the drive and engaged and pull back you get the resistance from the transmission and some sound but you cannot pull backwards .The local Honda guy doesnt even want to look at it as says it 24 years old has to be transmission . Im lost what to try to prove it is the transmission ? Im just confused why it sopped on a dime and no indications or soujnd?? Help
 
What about the belt? Is it slipping? did the engine dump some oil on it? Have you checked the engine oil level to see if any is missing like if the bottom seal let loose after 24 years...

The local Honda guy is a putz. If an authorized dealer won’t give it a go, that ain’t good. He should know that equipment backwards and forwards.
Since it is already broken, you can’t break it now. Dive in deeper if you have the time and inclination.

Belt is not slipping and it does not have oil on it . Oil level is good . Still working on it and will check shear pin in transmission pulley today. I read something about rust where you have to remove transmission to check?

one possibilty is that the key on one side went bad and you did not know it. In that scenario only one wheel would have been driving the mower. Then the remaining key failed so all drive went away. Most of the mowers like that have a live axle, and no differential, just a pinion and ring gear. If that went out it would do the same but I think the keys would be more suspect. On a live axle, if one side loses traction or drive, the other does not. These are maintenance items.
