I use one of the jigs sold on Amazon, and other sites as well, that holds the blade and a 4 1/2" angle grinder at a preset angle to sharpen my blades. I use 40 grit flapper discs. I love it, it's fast, and does a good job. I touch the blade tips up on the grinding wheel to get it correct and then balance. Problem is, the flapper discs don't last. They seem to get polished, and then won't hardly grind. Is that because of using it on hardened steel ? Is there a way to revive the disc, or is the problem bargain discs off Amazon ?

Could be the Amazon grinding disc, or could be the blade you are grinding. Back when I was using a commercial blade grinder that used a wheel I had glazing issues when grinding John Deere blades. JD blades would gum up the grinding grit and would need to be cleaned after every blade. Not so much now with my grinder that uses ceramic belts
A friend also questioned the bargain discs, altho they seem hefty enough. And yes, glazing is a better word for it. They don't gum up, the ends of the flaps just glaze over and don't wear down. I wonder if they have ceramic flapper discs ? Time to surf the internet some. Thanks for the reply.

I change grinding discs often due to glazing. I tried flapper discs and they just didn’t work at all. I buy 60 grinding discs at a time and sharpen a lot of blades. Many of the blades from customers are really beat up and require a lot of sharpening.
Roger on the glazing. The flapper discs work very well, cuts fast, but the glazing only let's me use about 20% of the disc. What grinding discs do you use ? I tried a metal grinding disc, but it glazed also and didn't do a good job.
I did, today. Was at the local hardware store, picked a Dewalt 60 grit flapper. Gads, it works better than the others! Now just need to see how it wears down. Never occurred to me that the discs would have been substandard. You know the saying; you get what you pay for. Will follow up in a week or so.
I agree about 40 vs 60, but they didn't have any 40 grit, and believe it or not, the Dewalt 60 cut faster than the off brand 40 grit from Amazon. Don't get me wrong, the off brand did work, but they glazed over too fast, making 75-80% of the disc unusable.
I'll look for Dewalt 40 grit online.

I get flapper disc from my welding supplier, I think they are made by Forney. They hold up really well. I don't recommend anything from Amazon because they are a dumping ground for inferior products.
