Toro Twister 1600 Utility Vehicle

My neighbour has asked me to bring his old Toro 1600 Utility vehicle, Model No 1200, back to life.

My initial diagnosis, is a failed starter motor however this may be the least of, a very poorly maintained, vehicles problems.

In the interest of knowing what the options may be for the future, I have been trying to get information on the B&S 16hp V twin engine, Model No 303447-1319-EI.

I am told this engine was a special build/supply from B&S to Toro. The engine may (if my informant is correct) have a specially taped PTO/crankshaft, to connect with the belt drive mechanism.

I would be grateful for:
  • Comment on the above Engine/ PTO information - True/False ?
  • Any commentary on known issues with the Twister that I should look out for?

Did you bench test or say jumper pack across the starter directly to test her out? Pulling the negatve battery cable off first?
 
Hi Slomo,
The starter worked twice (ie started the engine) in quick succession (engine did not continue to run). Third & subsequent tries, to start, had the starter spin but not engage the ring gear. To rule out battery power, jump start was tried with the same result. It may be the engagement mechanism OR the starter windings overheating (reducing starter speed). Either way the simple solution is to replace starter (rather than rebuild).
My main concerns, at this stage, is if the engine is not a good ongoing prospect - what to do?
Owner has asked for a plan B engine replacement feasibility/cost - looking for some input from the Forum on this. 😈

Crankshaft Specs

B = Ball bearing, power take-off side.
L = Pressure lubrication.
R = Rewind starter engine. [not used on this engine]
E = Electric starter engine.

This crankshaft has been superseded to 84004505.

Briggs direct replacement is 305447-3079-G1.

Looked up the information on this rig. Made around 2002, top speed 19 mph. Looks like slow UTV basically. Option would be to buy an aftermarket starter and install it so you can diagnose the other issues this vehicle will have.
 
To look up parts other than the engine the OP needs the full model number and serial. 1200 is an incomplete number as it would either a 12004 or 12004TC.

As the starter the OP needs to determine if the flywheel as a steel or aluminum ring gear. Then the OP can use the correct Briggs part number to look for an aftermarket starter.

691564 Steel ring gear and the starter has a steel Bendix gear.
795121 Aluminum ring gear and the starter has a plastic Bendix gear.

Just if it is the steel ring there maybe a different looking starter on the unit which was replaced by the 691564.
