I'll bet there's a way to do this but is sure isn't obvious.
When you select REPLY and the quoted message comes up with your space below it to reply....how the hell do you cancel the REPLY action. There is zero cancellation selection anywhere so now you're stuck with a quote with no reply just hanging out there that can't be dismissed.
Anybody?

It's solved. A counter intuitive way to do things....when you hit REPLY then change your mind you have to POST REPLY anyway. There is no other option. Then the posted reply has the DELETE option that kills the post. My guess is the programmer already had the post number (in the upper right of the posted reply) assigned to your reply and there was no way to back out of that. When you hit DELETE in the posted reply it calls a subroutine to renumber all the following posts. Guess it works but it's a bit kludgy....
Why not just delete the quoted text?
The reply box is always at the bottom of all the post pages so you could add to the post. When you click the "Reply" next to the "Like" it's just quoting the message you click reply on and bringing you to the bottom of the page. If you don't want it auto-quoting, just scroll to the bottom of the page?
You're still replying to the thread so I'm not sure what you meant by "Change your mind" needing to post and then delete? Why not just not post or not reply?
Try it. Then try to dismiss the reply page. What you get is the quoted text box without any associated reply.
I guess you've never changed your mind.....lucky you.

@RevB I am confused on what you are trying to do. Using drafts deletes the auto saved text, but doesn't empty the reply box. When you hit the back button it will normally not follow you to the next thread. Or if you hit reply and then don't want to use the quote you can either highlight the entire quote and hit the back space and the quote gets deleted including the box, or start at the end of the quote and back space the entire quote also gets rid of the quote box.
I'm not being sarcastic, I'm trying to understand what you mean by "associated reply" because posts are made to the thread in chronological order, the first post up top and the newest post at the bottom. Replying to a post "in the middle" so to speak will quote that post in your reply, but your reply will go to the bottom of the thread. If you JUST reply, or if you delete the quoted text, your post goes to the bottom of the thread.

ETA: Ok, so I "dismissed" the page by going to page 1, but I didn't clear out the reply box. And there WAS no reply box on my screen. I clicked "Post Reply" hoping to open the reply box, and it posted the message instead of bringing up the reply. In this case, the Post Reply button sent whatever I had left in the box instead of giving me a new box (even though I left the page.)
Is that what you're talking about? Because I can see how that is problematic. I'm going to see if there is a way for us to fix that, and at least display the reply box if there is data stored in it to post.
No, I know you're not...this software is counter intuitive to any other I've encountered.
When you hit REPLY to a post, does it not bring up the greyed out original post as "quoted text" and allow you to "associate" your reply with that? Yes it does. But if you change your mind there is no way out except to POST REPLY with no associated reply text and only then will you have the option to delete that post. Every other site has a CANCEL button, or something similar, that takes care of that with one selection.
I now don't think you need to change anything except provide an explanation in the HELP section that once you hit REPLY you must POST REPLY, even is there is none, and then DELETE that same numbered post as the clean up step. Once you know how it works it's trivial to correct it....assuming users are conscientious enough to do so....
