John Deere Z930a mower restart

Does it not turnover with the starter, or does it turnover and not fire/run.
It turns over just fine, but will not start for a while and then starts just fine. Even if I just start it then turn it off, it will not start

Grab a can of carb cleaner & a pair of red in line spark testers.
Fit the spark testers then go mow.
When you shut down the engine & it won't start again , crank the engine and look at the testers.
If they are still flashin bright red then the ignition is not you problem.
Now give the carb short shot of carb cleaner.
If the engine fires then you have a carb / fuel delivery problem
No joy the pull a plug and give the cylinder a SHORT shot of cleaner the refit the plug and crank again.
do both sides , one at a time.
If it fires now but not when sprayed down the carb, you have a valve problem.

Very good advice. Are you familiar with a valve in the bottom of the carb that shuts off the fuel when the key is turned off and then a delay before it reopens?

There should be no delay on the fuel shut off valve.
The only delay usually fitted is to the seat switch and this is to compensate for bouncing up & down on rough terrain.
