What are the best pre-emergents to apply in September?
 
i showed the same pictures to a few guys at a car show and they do not see any purple in those pictures. that was on my camera. so maybe the camera or the monitor is showing the grass in the wrong colors.

That picture changed nothing. The plant is too small and not mature. I am still calling it crabgrass.

No such things as a pre-emergent for September. It would be a post-emergent at this point. Crabgrass will not respond to a post-emergent. You will have to put up with it this year and start with a pre-emergent early spring.
 
thanks but that grass is full grown. here is some pictures of some grass in a different place that is larger than what i'm talking about. the grass in question is full grown and just spreading. now it may be a form of crabgrass or some other kind of grass, that is why i'm asking. but look at the pictures the 1st 3 are the larger plant and the 2nd 3 are from a section in that area and the plant size is way smaller. thanks for the help though if it all is crabgrass i'm guessing i have a bumper crop this year. thanks bp.

Looks like St. Augustine and Bermuda commingled, to me. I use Drive 8LR8 post emergent when I get crab grass. Works well, usually takes to applications, 2 weeks apart. Dimension pre-emergent works well. Must be applied before the crabgrass appears or when it’s in its infancy. Best to apply earlier than later and do two applications, 4-6 weeks apart.
 
thanks for that information. i now have the grass growing seed so i'm going to let it grow and then the seed will do it's job for the winter and spring. i don't know what seed it is but i let the fall grass go to seed every few years and that helps me keep whatever it was growing. thanks again
 
Looks like St. Augustine and Bermuda commingled, to me so if it is this kind it should be an ok type of grass. and one or the other will prevail. like i just said i'm going to let this grass this year go to seed and see how it looks next year. the seed is only like 4" tall now and the grass is like 3" so it is not yet hard to get around in it. thanks
 
He's in Michigan. Should not be St. Aug or Bermuda. I think it's a combination of crabgrass and goosegrass. They grow from seed every year. Goosegrass is a really nasty weed grass, with a prostrate growth habit, radiating out from a light colored center. Best to dig it up with a dandelion digging fork. Raising the mowing height helps to control it, or you can carefully spray the center of the clump with glyphosate mix, then pull it out more easily a couple weeks later.
