Hello my name is Jason and I have got my first jd 317 it has a 17 hp Kohler and it smokes and thinking it needs some rings
I have about $100 in it and it has a 48" deck with hydraulic ports on the front not sure what year it is but the numbers I found are c317L and 204041 can anyone tell me what I have and I I got hurt with the price it is completely together except the did cover's on the side's of the tractor where the motor is thanks in advance

You have a 1982 317 John Deere with a Kohler KT17QS engine, Hydrostatic transmission , deck sizes 46, 48, or 50 inch. If all it needs is a set of rings you got a good deal for 100 dollars.

Hi, Jason. Welcome to the forum. :welcome:

I'm going to move your thread over to the JD section in case you still need some answers.

Keep the bugs away, I guess it depend on how much it smokes and how much it brothers you. You might try some heaver oil in it and see what happens?

Welcome. Always glad to see someone preserving one of the classic John Deere's. I have an 89 285 myself, and it's simply awesome for it's age. Give it a little love, it will last forever!

The 317 is a great machine and being a 82 model you have the series II motor which has full pressure lubrication. $100 is a flat out steal.
