Just finished installing a yard of multch, I always have gone and bought the plastic edging only to have a stake come out causing that edge pull up. I have a neighbor that has a landscape company. I saw his yard and I noticed no edging or pavers to hold multch. I asked him why, he said to just cut a line with a spade and fill that natural edge with multch. Looks much better and will be easy to fix down the road. Also add L X W X thickness to get an accurate Sq ft to get enough so you do not have to make serveral runs to Menards.

yes use a spade. eventually the weeds will grow on and/or through the plastic and its a nightmare to weed.
At the edge of the bed use the spade to cut straight down about 4" or so and the move inward about 4" or so and cut at an angle back to the straight edge. Do that all they way around and clean it out. I always put down some pre emergent under the mulch to slow down new weed growth.
(Length x width x 2) / 324 will tell you how many yards of mulch you need. So if your bed is 4ft x 20ft it would be 4x20x2 = 160/324 = 0.49yds of mulch.
the x2 is for 2 inches deep. Thats pretty much my default unless a customer ask for it deeper.
